A note on Coffee Lake/H310 and Windows 7
A while ago I upgraded my i5 3750K running on a P5KPL-CM mobo to an i5 8600 running on an asus prime H310M-K, and I wanted to run Windows 7 on it. If you clicked on this thread you probably already know that 7 isn't supported anymore on 7th and 8th gen Intel CPUs, but some people manage to make it work. Information on how to do this is a bit spotty, and mostly attempted on Z370 chipsets, so I'm posting this here hoping that it'll save someone a bit of time. TL;DR - It didn't work. I think only Z370 chipsets can manage this.
Also let's not get into the reasons why I tried installing Win7, we all know the beauty of PCs is the ability to do whatever you want with your hardware.
From what I understand series 300 boards run a USB 3.0 controller, even for USB 2.0 ports. The problem is the Win7 setup solutions don't have drivers for that, since the technology wasn't on the market back then. You can get around this by slipstreaming the drivers into a Win7 install, but it's quite a hassle, and in my case it didn't work. It seems you can get away with installing win10 usb3.0 drivers on a Z board, but not on the other ones.
First attempt, after hardware was switched: my old installation booted right up with no problem, but there was no way to get input to the computer as USB ports wouldn't work and the OS didn't know how to use LAN.
Second attempt, digital river Win7 image burned to USB stick with the ASUS EZ install tool: the setup doesn't recognize USB ports. Dang.
Third attempt, recovery console from Win7 USB burned using the Windows 7 image updater tool: Setup sees keyboard and mouse without a hitch. Using dism from the command line you can basically slip drivers into an existing install and mess around with a bunch of stuff. After trying several times to install motherboard drivers, windows is still deaf.
Fourth attempt, same image burned to USB: Reformat, install proceeds without problem. Windows boots up, but once again USB ports are dead.
Fifth attempt: Bite the bullet and reach for the Win10 LTSB image.

To sum things up, if you're running anything other than a Z370 chipset motherboard, odds are you won't be able to get 7 to work. I haven't seen anyone online mention it working on the other types of boards. So either stick to Ivy Bridge or trial the LTSB. The latter isn't as bad as I expected.
