    Hi,
    Are these random crashes that can occur anywhere in the game, or does it happen only in specific areas or circumstances?
    Users have had success with resolving crash issues by turning off Data Execution Prevention in Windows for all Sims 3 base/expansion game executables. For instructions on how to selectively turn off DEP please refer to the following links:

    Let's try this, also:
    1. Click Start or press the Windows key and R, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.
    2. Click on Startup.
    3. Select disable All.
    4. Click on Services.
    5. Check the box that says Hide All Microsoft Services, then Disable All.
    6. Apply, then restart your system.
    Start TS3. This will eliminate most of what might be interfering with the program running properly on a software level. Once you're done, repeat the above procedure, using the Enable All buttons to turn services and startup items back on.

    They are random crashes, although it doesn't seem to happen in Create-a-sim or Build mode. I don't have any mods or custom content, just TS3 plus expansion packs. Oh and I have already tried the DEP thing, but it still crashes.

    Disabling Windows services via Msconfig will leave them off until you reactivate them again. The settings, on or off, will persist with each Windows reboot. The point of that troubleshooting test is to isolate any background applications or processes that are interfering with the game on a software level.
    Looking at the DXDiag report, you will want to update your NVidia drivers from the NVidia website. Having the most up to date video drivers is especially important when adding a game expansion or update. Before installing the new video drivers, be sure to uninstall the old drivers first via Add or Remove Programs as recommended by EA. To access Add or Remove Programs in Vista, follow these steps:
    1.) Click on the Start button from Windows taskbar.
    2.) Now select Control Panel.
    3.) A new window will appear - select Programs.
    4.) Now click on Programs and Features.
    Locate the items you want to work with and then click on the Uninstall/Change button. After the new drivers have been installed, another thing to try is to reset the NVidia driver settings back to their factory defaults.
    It is also advised that you clear your cache files before relaunching the game. The following cache files can be found in Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3:

It is now known that the Sims 3 throttles the graphics processor quite aggressively - meaning the game forces the GPU to work much harder than it actually needs to for smooth gameplay (you may notice erratic and sudden FPS spikes). Users have reported that this has led to video cards or video chipsets that get overheated in a short amount of time. Prolonged heat stress can in fact damage your video device if left unchecked. This overheating might be the cause of the random crash issues you are experiencing.
    Ensure you are using the PC in a room with a cool temperature. Verify that all cooling fans inside the PC case are operational and unobstructed. If and when there is dust accumulation, use cans of compressed air to clear them out - pay particular attention to cooling fans, heatsinks and exhaust vents. Do this while the PC is switched off, of course. Ideally, the general operating range of video cards is about 45-65 degrees Celsius. If necessary, install additional internal case fans for better cooling.
    But perhaps the best way to keep your video card running stable - in addition to keeping the ambient temperature down and the PC case well ventilated - is to enable a feature called V-Sync. Since your card is from NVidia, this can be done from the NVidia control panel (use the Force On setting). There is no V-Sync option from within the game itself at this time. This issue is currently under investigation by EA. If setting V-Sync via the control panel does not resolve your crash issues, you might try using a third party FPS limiter utility instead.     Disabling Windows services via Msconfig will leave them off until you reactivate them again. The settings, on or off, will persist with each Windows reboot. The point of that troubleshooting test is to isolate any background applications or processes that are interfering with the game on a software level.
    Looking at the DXDiag report, you will want to update your NVidia drivers from the NVidia website. Having the most up to date video drivers is especially important when adding a game expansion or update. Before installing the new video drivers, be sure to uninstall the old drivers first via Add or Remove Programs as recommended by EA. To access Add or Remove Programs in Vista, follow these steps:
    1.) Click on the Start button from Windows taskbar.
    2.) Now select Control Panel.
    3.) A new window will appear - select Programs.
    4.) Now click on Programs and Features.
    Locate the items you want to work with and then click on the Uninstall/Change button. After the new drivers have been installed, another thing to try is to reset the NVidia driver settings back to their factory defaults.
    It is also advised that you clear your cache files before relaunching the game. The following cache files can be found in Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3:

    Thanks for the response. I've tried everything you said except the FPS limiter as I can't seem to find a working download.
    However I have tried installing the game again, and TS3 without Ambitions or Design & High Tech Stuff seems to work fine??? So I'm guessing it can't be a frame rate issue if the base game works ok?
